The Porsche 935 was a ‘poster’ car for the 70s and 80s so how could it not appear in the Scalextric range! There are five different versions of the car in what seems at first glance to be an unfathomable collection of changes. Here’s the easy way to de-mystify the range of Porsche 911 type 935 body and chassis types.
Type 1 = Standard, without any of the features listed below.
Type 2 = Headlight ‘torch’ bulbs.
Type 3 = Small headlight filaments mounted in large clear plastic headlight block.
Type 4 = Rear LED lights, small headlight filaments in clear block and Magnatraction metal plate.
Type 5 = Door mirrors and Magnatraction moulded recess. Open 5-spoke wheels.
1977
The Scalextric model of the Porsche 911 type 935 was first introduced in 1977 as C125 in a plain white livery. Waterslide transfers were supplied to apply to the car. This livery was swiftly followed by the Martini livery car which now had chromed headlamp bezels. This car was issued first with waterslide transfers and then with tampo-printed decoration. Further liveries were introduced in this format until 1982.
Early versions had the car make name incorrectly spelt, moulded on the underpan as ‘PORCHE’.

Body type : 1 – lens fitted over front headlamps
Chassis type : 1 – no special features. Motor aperture for Johnson motor.
1980
The first Porsche 935 with lights was released in a green livery with a gold pinstripe. Small torch bulbs were fitted in a rather awkward set of copper plates mounted on the front of the chassis.
Silver, gold, black and red liveries were also released up until 1985.

Body type : 2 – front lights fitted.
Chassis type : 2 – uprights moulded in to the front of the chassis to support the copper lighting components. Motor aperture shortened for Mabuchi open can motor.
1988
An upgrade to the existing clumsy lighting system was required. With the benefit of the widening availability of ultra small filament bulbs, better lighting was provided at the front of the car. The support uprights on the front of the chassis for the copper strips were removed.
This Porsche 935 is listed as follows:
Body type : 3 – Front lights fitted using small filament lights.
Chassis type : 3 – Lighting assembly at the front of the chassis. Two screw bosses for screws at rear of chassis to secure the body. Mabuchi S closed can motor fitted.
1988
A further upgrade to the lighting system was made with the benefit of the widening availability of LEDs, rear lights were added to the car. Magnatraction, a magnet fitted to the underpan to increase downforce to the steel rails and thereby give better tyre traction, was introduced.
A range of liveries were introduced up until 1993.
Scalextric (Hornby Hobbies) products made for the Spanish market were relabelled as Superslot, as was the case of the white Porsche C407. This product was sold as H007 under Hornby Hobbies’ Superslot brand in Spain. The chassis for this car, and any other products going forward, had to have the Scalextric wording removed from the tooling. This was done by creating an ‘insert’ with the wording Hornby Hobbies Ltd which was set into the moulding tool.

Body type : 4 – Front lights and rear LED lights fitted. Body cut-outs at the rear valance for square exhausts and LED lights. Two screw posts at rear of body now used to secure the chassis to the body.
Chassis type : 4 – Lighting assembly at the front of the chassis and a loom for the LED rear lights. Two screw bosses for screws at rear of chassis to secure the body. A metal plate which is screwed into the chassis just in front of the rear axle and extends rear-ward where a bar magnet is glued to the plate parallel to the rear axle. Mabuchi S closed can motor fitted.
1994
Given that this ‘poster’ car had been so favourably received by Scalextric fans it still had a future in the Scalextric range. Door mirrors were fitted and a built-in Magnatraction system was introduced meaning tooling amendments to both body and chassis.
Further liveries were released up until 1997 when the final two cars had GULF and FINA liveries and concluded the successful twenty-year presence in the Scalextric range.

Body type : 5 – Front lights and rear LED lights fitted. Body cut-outs at the rear valance for square exhausts and LED lights. Two screw posts at rear of body now used to secure the chassis to the body. Push-in door mirrors.
Chassis type : 5 – Lighting assembly at the front of the chassis and a loom for the LED rear lights. Two screw bosses for screws at rear of chassis to secure the body. A moulded housing, just in front of the rear axle, to hold the Magnatraction bar magnet. Mabuchi S closed can motor fitted. Open five-spoke wheel hubs.
The 935 was replaced in the Scalextric range by the 911 GT3R.
